Net2Work Recap

I attended today's Net2Work session at the Des Moines Botanical Center. Andy Drish and Josh Ingalls gave an amazing presentation on how Social Media can help us in our job search.

To give those of you who couldn't make it a short overview, when researching a company you're interested in working for, your research should include:

Chatting with employees - use LinkedIn to see if you already know someone who works there or if there is a 2nd or 3rd degree of contact with someone within the organization.

Watching videos and reading comments - http://www.youtube.com/

Reading third-party reviews - http://www.jobvent.com/ and http://www.glassdoor.com/

Connecting with other applicants - if you can find out who else has applied

Job Openings - subscribe to job searches using an RSS Feed and iGoogle

Josh Ingalls spoke about taking control of the online content that is out there. All too often, when our names are googled, content comes up that we may or may not want potential employers to see. Josh created a simple and professional website including links to his online presence making it extremely easy for people to find information about him. This website shows up on the first page of google search results. It's all about taking control.

I would also suggest creating a Google Profile for yourself which is guaranteed to appear on the first page of google search results.
