I recently read an article entitled, "Career counseling draws alumni back to campus" published in the Boston Globe: http://tinyurl.com/nb2vrk. I got excited. I wondered what kinds of services my Alma Mater, Wartburg College, offers its alumni, i.e. those of us who are more than 5 years out of college. I'm celebrating my 10th reunion this year.
In searching the Alumni pages, I vaguely remembered using the Wartburg KnightNet. I was quickly reminded why I stopped using it as a resource; it's Wartburg's attempt at a LinkedIn for students/alumni, but very few people use it. Great.
hen I looked at the "Career Resources for Alumni" page to see how this amazing, private, liberal arts college could help me in my time of need, since I am, after all, still paying for my education. I was sadly disappointed. I don't even need to ask if I read the first couple of paragraphs correctly. I understand the writing on the wall; it's pretty clear:

As you might imagine, our online resources can provide you with information on alumni connections, job search resources, and information about continuing your education. Alumni are always welcome to stop in and browse our resource library located in the Pathways Center. However, it is important to note that our primary focus is serving the needs of our current students, thus most of our resources tend to be geared toward current students and recent graduates.Because our main focus lies in counseling and advising undergraduate students (and those who have just recently graduated), we provide limited advice and referral services to those more advanced in their career. Career assessments and counseling can be better accessed from those who specialize in adult career transitions such as the Iowa Workforce Development and CareerOneStop.

Have any of you gotten back in touch with your Alma Maters to see if you can use their career center resources in your job search? What have you found? I hope your Alma Mater has more to offer its alumni.
